I really can’t wait to see
Tropic Thunder. I tipped this movie in April at my day job for thechingon.com (I can’t hyper-reference this separated by birth coincidence, since the site has gone offline).
There are so many market-driven ploys to see summer comedies, but none more deceptive and elusive than the historical black face pull. See Gene Wilder’s
Silver Streak but more accurately,
Putney Swope.
My buddy, Jeff, hipped me to Tropic Thunder’s SUPER SECRET:
Robert Downey Sr. (junior’s dad) wrote and directed this black face farcical comedy called Putney Swope in 1969. It’s about a black advertising executive, who accidentally is mock-voted the top job in white Corporate America.
Putney Swope’s SUPER SECRET is refocusing the agency efforts into Truth and Soul Inc by denouncing its reliable alcohol and cigarette clients. Robert Downey Jr. SUPER SECRET is focusing his interview energy by not bringing up this reference.
I never really liked Robert Downey Jr before. But in the last 5 years my opinion is changing because of the quality of Downey Jr’s work. His roles have always been edgy without responsibility. You know… art for art’s sake. And to me that’s a simple excuse for having nothing to say.
Tropic Thunder has got plenty of comedy to laugh at. I wish I could just read an interview with Downey Jr where Putney Swope is referenced. I’m all ears.
